Eight Christmas gifts for a boss that pass the etiquette test: prices from $20 to $89, what to skip, and the order-by date.
A good Christmas gift for a boss is modest, impersonal, and ideally from the team: $20 to $50 from one person, under $100 from a group. A gift-boxed tea set, a hardcover notebook or a desk plant fit those rules. Perfume, clothing and anything over $50 alone do not.
Every November the same email reaches our Newport Beach studio: is it strange to give my manager something, and how much is too much. I answer every one. Most lists answer with gag mugs. Etiquette first, then objects.
We sell five of the eight picks. Strabella prices were checked on Strabella's live product pages on September 20, 2026, and the three outside brands on their own sites the same day, never linked. Our editorial and testing policy explains why.
TL;DR: from one person, a Moleskine hardcover at $26 or the Matcha Whisk Set at $55, box included, the one I would choose. From a group of colleagues, the Hojicha Whisk Set at $89. Order by December 17 for free standard shipping.
Is it appropriate to give your boss a Christmas gift?
Yes, on three conditions: modest, impersonal, and ideally from the group. Emily Post says the best way to give to a boss is as a department or group, and rules out perfume, cologne and pajamas. A gift from you alone can read as currying favor; six signatures on a $90 object read as thanks.
Then check your company's gift policy. An employment attorney quoted by SHRM in 2014 called $20 a standard cap and suggested asking what was given in past years. If nobody ever has, a card is the gift. (Business owners gifting a client: the IRS deduction stops at $25 per person per year.)
What to look for in a Christmas gift for a boss
A boss gift has to clear four tests: impersonal, around $50 alone, already boxed, usable within a week.
- Impersonal by design. Nothing that touches skin or implies you know their size or scent.
- Around $50 alone, under $100 as a group. Between November 1 and December 24 last year, 216 of our 247 paid orders landed between $40 and $60. That band is our own catalog talking, not a market norm: our best-selling set is $55. Appropriateness comes from the rules above. More in our report on why buyers pick one good object.
- Already boxed. No wrapping at your desk.
- Usable within a week. A tea set is used the next morning; a framed print needs a wall.
8 Christmas gifts for your boss: solo picks and coworker group gifts
Five gifts one person can give, then three for coworkers to pool at $15 to $20 a head.
1. Strabella Matcha Whisk Set, $55: boxed, and used
Strabella's Matcha Whisk Set is $55 and arrives as seven pieces in a gift-ready box: bamboo chasen, ceramic chawan, whisk holder, bamboo scoop, stainless sifter, tea mat and a printed how-to guide (blue, pink, or purple). The list price was $80. I rank it first for one reason: nothing gets wrapped at your desk, and it is in use the next morning. Between November 1 and December 24 last year we shipped 238 of these sets.
2. Moleskine Classic Notebook, large, $26: the safest solo gift
The Moleskine Classic Notebook in large hardcover is $26 on Moleskine's own site, the safest solo gift here. A ruled black cover holds no opinion about the recipient. Skip the pocket size, too small for writing during calls.
3. Strabella Matcha Tea Cup, $20: the $20-cap gift
Strabella's Hand-Pinched Matcha Tea Cup is $20, down from $26, and holds 8.5 oz, landing exactly on the $20 cap the attorney quoted by SHRM called standard. Skip it for a boss with a shelf of conference mugs.
4. Fellow Carter Move Mug, 12 oz, $30: the coffee commuter
The Fellow Carter Move Mug holds 12 oz and is $30, listed at $29.95, for the manager who arrives each morning with a paper cup. Skip the 40 oz Stanley Quencher at $45; half the office owns one already.
5. Strabella Ru Kiln Tea Caddy, $39: the tea shelf
Strabella's Ru Kiln Ceramic Tea Caddy is $39, down from $60, and holds either loose leaf or matcha under a fitted lid. Buy it only if you have seen tins on their desk; bagged-tea drinkers leave it empty.
6. Strabella Hojicha Whisk Set, $89: group gift, low caffeine
Strabella's Hojicha Whisk Set is $89, down from $99, and holds a bamboo whisk, a ceramic bowl and 30 g of stone-milled Kyoto hojicha. I would put a team card on this for a manager who says coffee after two keeps them up. Skip it for a boss who has never had green tea; our guide to gifts for tea lovers has pots and tumblers instead.
7. The Sill ZZ Plant, $39 or $79 planted: the office window
The Sill's ZZ Plant in the small size is $39 in a grow pot or $79 in a ceramic planter, and stands 9 to 12 inches. ZZ plants tolerate a dim corner and forgetful watering. The $79 planted pot is the one to pool for. Skip anything needing a south-facing window.
8. Strabella Mosaic Candle Warmer Lamp, $89: already owns candles
Strabella's Handmade Mosaic Candle Warmer Lamp is $89, down from $110, and is dimmable. I do not gift candles to anyone I report to. A warmer lamp warms the candles they already own without a flame. Group gift only; skip it for a minimalist office.

Which one should you buy?
Buy the $26 notebook or the $20 tea cup if you are giving alone and do not know what your manager drinks, the $55 Matcha Whisk Set if you have seen a matcha latte on their desk, and the $89 Hojicha Whisk Set or the $79 planted ZZ if a group is pooling. Last December our busiest day was December 15, with 28 orders. If your manager has just moved desks or houses, our kitchen housewarming gifts under $75 list is the closer fit.
Frequently asked questions
How much should you spend on a Christmas gift for your boss?
Spend $20 to $50 giving alone, and under $100 if a group of colleagues pools. An employment attorney quoted by SHRM called $20 a standard written cap, so read your own gift policy first.
What is a good gift for a boss who has everything?
Give something consumable, or something that replaces an object they use daily: good tea, a better notebook, a boxed matcha set at $55. Avoid decor, which assumes you know their taste.
What should you not give your boss for Christmas?
Skip perfume, cologne and pajamas, the three Emily Post rules out by name, plus clothing and anything sized. I also skip candles for anyone I report to; scent is a personal call.
What is the best Christmas gift for colleagues?
Identical and under $30 each, so nobody compares. For a team I send everyone the same object, usually the hand-pinched matcha tea cup at $20. Office Christmas gifts for coworkers should not need explaining, so skip anything with a joke on it.
When should you order a Christmas gift for your boss?
Order by December 17 for free standard US shipping to arrive before December 25, and choose expedited between December 18 and 20. Strabella orders placed by 1 PM Pacific ship in one business day; standard delivery runs three to five.
I answer the gift emails myself. If you are stuck between the whisk set and something safer, tell me what is on their desk. Lisa, founder, Strabella.
