What is hojicha?

Hojicha is a Japanese green tea that has been roasted, which turns it from grassy and bright into something warm, round and smooth. The roasting burns off much of the caffeine, so hojicha is naturally low in caffeine — gentle enough for the late afternoon or evening. Expect notes of caramel, toasted nuts and wood. It's whisked exactly like matcha, making a comforting, milky cup without the jitters. Where matcha is vivid, grassy and energizing, hojicha is roasted, round and calm. The roasting lowers the caffeine considerably, so a cup in the late afternoon won't keep you up. How to Use

1. Soak the whisk in warm water for 5 minutes before first use.
2. Sift 1.5–2g of hojicha into the bowl.
3. Add 80ml of water around 175°F / 80°C (or steam milk for a hojicha latte).
4. Whisk in an M-motion for 15–20 seconds until smooth.
5. Drink as-is, or pour over ice or milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hojicha the same as matcha?
No — both are green tea, but hojicha is roasted, which makes it lower in caffeine with a toasty, mellow flavor instead of matcha's bright, grassy taste. The whisk and bowl work for both.

Does this come with the tea included?
Yes — unlike our basic Matcha Tea Set, this one includes 30g of Kyoto hojicha powder, so it's ready to use the moment it arrives.

Can I use this set for matcha too?
