A note from Lisa
Family-built since 2023.
I started Strabella in 2023, in our kitchen in Newport Beach.
The first thing we made was the matcha bowl — heavy enough to hold heat through a full sit. Fourteen versions before we got it right.
Everything we sell now is a thing we kept on our counter for a month before shipping. The stone drying mat. The brush set. The cutting board that came out of the dishwasher unscarred.
Hand-packed in California, by people who actually use what they pack.
MATCHA AT HOME
How to make matcha in 90 seconds
The four steps that actually matter — from a kitchen in Newport Beach.
Sift the matcha
About 1 gram, or half a teaspoon. Through a fine sieve into a wide bowl. Don't skip this — clumped matcha never fully whisks.
Pour 175°F water
Hot, but not boiling. Boiling water makes ceremonial matcha bitter. Start with one tablespoon — just enough to make a paste.
Whisk in a W motion
Not a circle. Two strokes per second, from the wrist. The chasen prongs are designed for back-and-forth. Stop at fine foam.
Drink within 2 minutes
The foam dissipates fast. So does the heat. The bowl was made heavier than usual to slow this down — but only by a minute.
Honest answers
Common questions
How do you make matcha at home?
Sift one gram of ceremonial matcha into a warm chawan, add about 60 ml of 70-80 °C water, then whisk with a bamboo chasen in a fast W pattern for 20 to 30 seconds until a fine foam forms. Drink straight or top with hot or cold milk for a latte. Full 90-second guide.
What's in a Strabella matcha whisk set?
Our Matcha Whisk Set includes a hand-cut Madake bamboo chasen with about 80 prongs, a hand-pinched ceramic chawan sized for a single bowl, a bamboo scoop, and a holder. Optional bundles add ceremonial Yame matcha. See the set.
Is Strabella's matcha ceremonial grade?
Yes. Our matcha is single-origin Yame from Fukuoka, Japan, stone-ground from spring-harvest tencha and tested in our Newport Beach kitchen before listing. It is suitable for usucha and gentle koicha. Culinary-grade matcha is sold separately for baking and latte recipes. Read the sourcing page.
Where is Strabella matcha sourced?
From Yame in Fukuoka, Japan. Yame is a small region known for shaded tencha leaves and slow stone-grinding. We work with one producer there and hand-pack every tin in Newport Beach, California within 14 days of grinding. More on Yame and the producer.
How long does shipping take?
U.S. orders ship from Newport Beach in one to two business days, then arrive in two to five business days. Shipping is free on orders over twenty-five dollars. Father's Day cut-off is shown on each product page. Full shipping details.
